Ok I know I am normally not posting crafts on my blog, I am all about Tablescapes, DIY and Gardening but I figured who doesn't like burlap? Since nests of good quality seem to be a bit pricey I decided to make my own.
And I figured you would appreciate how I did it...
Here is a list of materials I used:
- 5" wide burlap ribbon (about 7' feet per nest)
- 4" cut strips of painters canvas material (found @ any home improvement store) also about 7 feet long
- Leftover rusted fencing (you can substitute heavy gauge wire if you like)
- Feathers of your choice
- Hot glue gun
I twisted one end of the burlap until the entire length was as tight as I wanted it. There's no wrong way to do this, some areas were completely rolled up and others were loose.
Then do the same thing with the canvas strip. You'll notice the painters tarp material I cut....I frayed it. I wanted it messy and with strings hanging all over.
I coiled it in a circle and glued being careful not to hot glue my fingers. Neatness didn't count....
I then cut a couple of random pieces of burlap....again I cut crooked on purpose. A bird was supposed to make this....not an OCD blonde like myself!
I gave the "rectangle" a twist in the middle, and hot glued it in a gap between the two rolls and pulled a few strings so the burlap was frayed.
2 years ago I found this rusty wire used for fencing for 2 bucks. Now I get to finally use it. I cut up 4 pieces of the fencing. Each piece was about the same size as the circumference of my nest.
I bent it in a really ugly looking circle and poked it thru any gaps I saw in my nest. It was easier to stick to the outside and bend inward to get the desired shape I needed.
When I got to an end I used needle nosed pliers to make an "O" to keep from puncturing my candles, birds or anything else I put in these nests.
I then hot glued feathers in wherever I felt like...
And lastly I cut up some rope, unraveled it, and wrapped that around poking in and out wherever....
That's it! Two nests took me less then one hour to make
XO,
Christine
