This DIY project is for the birds. Literally. Using a box I picked up at a Flea Market, let me show you how I made a Birdhouse with a View.
The supplies I used were:
One old box
Galvanized Sheet metal (roof)
Leftover scraps of wood, plywood and 2"x 2" scraps
Drill, screwdriver and a 3" hole saw
One small sheet of Plexiglass 8" x 10" (Lowes)
Wood Stain
I have always loved this box because of the Railway stamp on it.
I am still purging a lot of knick knacks and dishes from my home and this is something I wanted to keep but could not find a use for it. Letting it sit on my coffee table for a day or two, I remembered a birdhouse I once saw that had a window on one side.
And an idea was formed.
Keeping the markings the box was a priority, so I started talking to Greg about my plan.
We have a ton of leftover metal roofing and wood scraps, so I knew the only thing we would have to buy would be a small piece of plexiglass. Which is easy to find at any local Lowes or Home Depot.
I think mine was 4 bucks?
Using a hole saw, we offset the opening to the railway stamp. I am still on the hunt for the right peg or perch just outside the front door. I may want to add a nice wrap around porch but I'm still pondering that idea.
Art takes time and I don't want to rush it.
I thought I had a small gear I could use for a perch, but then thought against it. Metal and sunlight get hot and the last thing I want to do is get sued by Tweety because I scorched her feet.
Greg made the roof so it overlaps the box slightly and can be removed for cleaning purposes when needed.
Using a jigsaw we cut a square out of the "back" and used plexiglass for a large window. Our box actually had a wood brace inside, but if you are going to copy this idea I would use a glue rated for outdoors that's not toxic to wildlife.
Sharp screws next to baby birds all nestled on the inside was not an option.
Once the temps outside hit the 70's I am going to distress the roof so it is not so new and shiny.
Boric Acid is incredibly smelly and I'd rather hose this entire thing down afterwards to ensure I got it all washed off.
Plus did I mention it stinks? Rotted eggs or meat is Chanel No. 5 compared to this stuff. Also let me say I'm sorry about the crappy pictures. Greg's tool room in the basement is not photo friendly. It literally is concrete walls and lined with tools.
Using leftover Stain I darkened the new wood and the box so everything matched.
Once I am able to install it outside I am going to buy some moss for a nice seating area inside. I am starting to see articles from reliable sources that say not use to fabric, dryer lint because when wet any fabric softener or chemicals will seep out onto the birds. Natural fibers are best, like hemp, wool. Twigs, dry grass. They even say you can use dog hair or snake skins. Dog hair; now that's a score!
I am off to go find the perfect spot so we can Bird watch.
